Identifying Your Core Values
We’ve all heard about “Values” but let’s start with what they really are. According to an article from Brightspacecoaching.com “Core values are the fundamental beliefs you have about your life.”
They help you make choices & decisions that impact both your personal life and business. They help guide your behaviors by helping you stay on track and staying true to what’s important to you.
Now that we know what Core Values are, how do we determine them? There are many exercises that you can do to determine what your core values are. I started off by sitting and reflecting about the things that matter most in my life and why I do what I do. I then found a list of core values and roughly went down and highlighted the ones with potential. I whittled the list down further until I had 5 or 6 remaining.
I then pondered those words for a bit, thinking about which ones, at my core (see the theme) really drive the person I am and the person I aspire to be. From that list, I picked 3 values that resonated with me.
So, we found our core values, now what?
The purpose of finding your core values as mentioned earlier, will help you stay on track. We all know how chaotic our lives & business can get. When we want to say yes to everything but feel overwhelmed, we can reflect on our values and think, “Does this decision move me closer or further from my goal? Is it in alignment with my core values?” I believe that doing this helps you stay authentic & on track, by prioritizing what’s important to you. It takes some time to be able to live with your core values and really be able to honor them. I have mine posted in common places. Saved on my laptop on a sticky note, written in my daily planner, written on a whiteboard…you get it. And I remind myself of them every day so I can live my day with those values.
My core values are Community, Courage, & Adventure.
